Beachcomber Cruises are the Marlborough Sounds cruise, transport and Queen Charlotte Track transfer specialists. Proudly family owned and operated since 2006, our boats are out on the water 364 days of the year, rain or shine. Every day is different, you never know who or what you may meet, be it frolicking dolphins, playful seals or a lone blue penguin.

When you choose Beachcomber you cruise in safety and comfort, aboard vessels designed to highlight the fantastic scenery and surrounds. Size does matter when it comes to flexibility, reliability and cost effectiveness and we have a range of vessels to suit, from one person to 150.

Our team of skippers are highly experienced professionals, with comprehensive knowledge of the Marlborough Sounds which they enjoy sharing with you. The friendly office staff ensure the smooth operation of our services and are Queen Charlotte Track itinerary specialists. If you want to know how long it will take to walk from one point to the next, where to get the best lunch on the track or organise a grand gesture for your loved one they are the experts!

Based on the Picton waterfront our offices are conveniently located adjacent to both long and short term parking. One of the many perks of a waterfront location are the great views, but as wonderful as they are, it gets even better when you venture into the beautiful Marlborough Sounds or more specifically the Queen Charlotte Sound.

Our offices are open from 7am-6pm (01Oct-30Apr) during the summer, 8am-5pm (01May-30Sep)in winter and we are contactable outside of these hours by phone, 24 hours a day.

Options

#1 - Day in the Sounds - Furneaux Lodge

Start the day with a cruise on the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound out to Ship Cove. Ship Cove was named by Captain James Cook on 15 January 1770 when his ship the Endeavour anchored here to replenish supplies of food, water and wood. It became one of his favourite anchorages and he returned here a further four times between 1770 and 1777.

You will have the chance to go ashore here for 30 minutes to explore, read the information panels, take pictures or just walk along the beach. We'll then return back towards Picton exploring bays and watching out for wildlife along the way before dropping you off at Furneaux Lodge.

Furneaux Lodge is nestled at the foot of Mount Furneaux in the Endeavour Inlet, surrounded by 2000 acres of native virgin forest. Set in three acres of lawns and gardens, Furneaux Lodge is totally un-spoilt as access is by boat or walking only.

Furneaux Lodge is a wonderful place to relax and/or enjoy a walk through the native forest to their very own waterfall.

Please note all food and beverage costs are payable directly to the hotel and are not included in the package price.

#2 - Day in the Sounds - Punga Cove Resort

Start the day with a cruise on the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound out to Ship Cove. Punga Cove is just the place to spend the day relaxing. It is set in magnificent surroundings with the Punga Boat Shed Bar boasting breathtaking views across the Endeavour Inlet. There is also a spa, swimming pool and kayaks available for use.

All food, beverages and facility charges are payable to the Punga Cove Resort directly and are not included in the tour price.

Pick-up from Punga Cove approximately 4-4.30pm to arrive in Picton at 5.30-6pm


#3 - Day in the Sounds - Ship Cove

Depart Picton at 9:00am making your way though the picturesque Queen Charlotte Sounds sit back and relaxing before reaching Ship Cove you chosen destination for the day. Spend the day at Ship Cove taking in the history and maybe even a walk to the waterfall walk before been picked up and brought up back to Picton approx 5:30/6:00pm


#4 - Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove Walk

Cruise from Picton to Furneaux Lodge where you disembark. Take the opportunity to grab a coffee or even brunch before beginning your walk to Punga Cove Resort. This section of the Queen Charlotte Track mainly follows the coastline around Endeavour Inlet through regenerating native bush. Once farmland, this part of the walkway has reverted to nature and the forest is once again lush and alive with the sound of birdsong. The area is also rich with history as it was once the site of an Antimony Mine, take some time to read the interpretation panels there. Continue around the shore, with pasture land on either side and then through native forest with views right down the Inlet to the main Queen Charlotte Sound. Upon arrival at Punga Cove Resort relax on the deck of the Boat Shed Café with a well-deserved beverage until your return boat journey to Picton.

Duration: 12.7kms, approximately 2 ¾ -4 ½ hours walk

#5 - One Way to Ship Cove

For the truly independent traveller. This product includes a transfer to Ship Cove on one of our three scheduled services and we'll transfer your pack to your first overnight stop.

That's it - easy!

Departs: Daily @ 8.00am (01Oct-30Apr only) or 9.00am $ 1.30pm

Check-in: 30 minutes prior to departure

The Ship Cove Track & Pack Pass includes:
* Transfer from Picton and drop off at Ship Cove (the beginning of the Queen Charlotte Track) on one of our 3 scheduled boats.
* One pack/bag transfer - 20kg per person

Excludes: Accommodation, Transfers not specified above, Mountain Bike transportation ($5 one-way/$10 return), option to stop at Motuara Island if travelling on the 8am departure for an additional $5 pp, QTLC Pass (required if walking across private land between Punga Cove & Anakiwa).

Additional transfers can be purchased at an extra cost.


#6 - Magic Mail Run

This is our most popular trip and a great way to explore the beautiful Marlborough Sounds. We operate the only official licensed New Zealand Post Rural delivery service by water in the Queen Charlotte Sound. The route changes daily but we always stop at Ship Cove, where you can take pictures at Captain Cook's memorial, walk along the beach with a good chance of encountering a curious Weka or two, Oyster Catchers and Paradise Ducks.

Tour Highlights:
* Delivering mail to the local residents; say hi to the kids waiting for their school work.
* 15 minutes ashore at Ship Cove, a favourite anchorage of Captain Cook's
* View the resident wildlife and marine mammals such as New Zealand Fur Seals and visiting dolphins.
* Learn the history of the Marlborough Sounds and its residents from your friendly skipper.
* Complimentary tea and coffee.

Important note: During the winter months the Mail Boat can sometimes return up to an hour earlier due to fewer mail deliveries and passenger drop-offs as travelling times are reduced. You will however, still get the same great commentary.

Please also be advised that in winter we are not guaranteed to make a stop at Ship Cove.

Please note that this tour does not run on a Sunday please book the Sunday Afternoon Cruise as an alternative.


#7 - Ship Cove Cruise

Cruise from Picton, up through the Queen Charlotte Sound to historical Ship Cove. Along the way your skipper will provide a commentary on the surrounds, history and the wildlife be it bird, fish or mammal!

As the name would suggest the highlight of this tour is a 30 minute stopover at Ship Cove. Named by Captain James Cook on 15 January 1770 when his ship The Endeavour anchored here to replenish supplies of food, water and wood. It became a favourite anchorage of Captain Cook and he returned here a futher four times between 1770 and 1777.

Take the opportunity to dabble in the creek where Captain Cook made home brew for his crew and share the beach with the resident wildlife. Have your photo taken beside the Captain Cook Monument commemorating his visits to this area or just relax and enjoy the tranquil surrounds.

Tour Highlights:
* 30 minutes ashore at Historical Ship Cove

Returns: 12.30pm

**Please note that during our Winter Months the boat may return to Picton as early as 11am. The reservations staff will confirm the tour content and arrival time upon check in.


#8 - Sunday Afternoon Cruise

Everyone knows Sundays are for cruising! What could be better than a leisurely boat trip out to Motuara island, a predator free bird sanctuary, home to some of the New Zealand's rarest and endangered native birds with magnificent views from the look-out. Then cruise to historical Ship Cove to visit Captain Cook's monument before heading back to Picton via a salmon farm in Ruakaka Bay.

Tour Highlights:
* Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary - 30 minutes ashore
* Historical Ship Cove - 15 minutes to explore
* Complimentary tea & coffee

#9 - Motuara Island Bird Watchers Cruise

This tour operates during the summer season and attracts bird lovers from around the world. Motuara Island is a predator free haven for some of New Zealand's most iconic and critically endangered native birds including the South Island Saddleback, the very rare King Shag, Little Blue Penguin and of course the Kiwi to name just a few.

Tour Highlights
* 60 minutes ashore Motuara Island
* Spectacular views of the North Island from the Cook Strait Lookout
* Complimentary tea and coffee on your return journey to Picton

#10 - Great Track & Pack Pass

The ultimate in value and flexibility. Choose your start and end point, walking/cycling distances and overnight stopovers where your luggage will be transferred to each day.

All you have to do is walk and enjoy a variety of landscapes from lush, green New Zealand forest with its vocal birdlife to sweeping panoramic views of the Marlborough Sounds.

Duration: 70kms, approximately 3-4 days walk

Departs: Daily @ 8.00am (01Oct-30Apr only) or 9am (all year round)

Check-in: 30 minutes prior to departure

The Great Track & Pack Pass includes the following:
* Transfer from Picton and drop-off at Ship Cove (the beginning of the track) on one of our 3 scheduled boats.
* A pick-up from Anakiwa at 3:30pm with an approximate arrival back in Picton of 4:00pm/4:30pm.
* Luggage transfers along the track - 20kg per person.

#11 - Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge Walk

Venture into the great outdoors and get away for the day. Starting with a scenic cruise from Picton to Ship Cove, a favourite anchorage of Captain Cook during the 1770's. Upon arrival step ashore and spend a few minutes exploring the beach where Captain Cook and his crew spent much of their time. Observe the resident Oyster Catchers and Weka and read the information boards about Captain Cook and the area's Maori history.

Then start your 15km walk to Furneaux Lodge. As you reach Tawa Saddle, take time to relax on the bench and enjoy the stunning scenery that surrounds you. Gaze out at the deep blue sea and let your troubles wash away with the tide.

On arrival at Furneaux Lodge a warm welcome awaits you. Enjoy some refreshments before boarding your return cruise to Picton at 4pm.

Departs from Picton at 8am (Departs 01Oct-30Apr only and allows 60-90 minutes at Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary) or 9.00am (all year round)

#12 - Resolution Bay to Furneaux Lodge Walk

Walk the 10.5kms of the Queen Charlotte Track from Resolution Bay to Furneaux Lodge. Listen to the call of bellbirds, fantails and other native NZ birds as you absorb the magnificent views of the Queen Charlotte Sound.


#13 - Torea Bay to Mistletoe Bay Walk

Get the best of both worlds, fantastic views over both the Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds.

Bring your lunch, your camera and wear good walking shoes. Depart our base in Picton and cruise over to Torea Bay. En-route relax and enjoy the scenery of the Marlborough Sounds. Disembark at Torea to explore 8kms of the Queen Charlotte Walkway. Along the track look out for the native wildlife.

Near the end of the walk the track drops down into the native forest of tree ferns and beech trees undisturbed except for the call of the Tui's and Bellbirds.

Duration: 7.8kms, approximately 2.5-3 hours
Departs Picton @ 9.30am (9am from 01Sep)
Pick Up Mistletoe Bay @ 3.00pm
Arrive Picton @ 4.30pm


#14 - Mistletoe Bay to Anakiwa Walk

Depart Picton at 10am, arriving in Mistletoe Bay at approximately 10.15am. Take the road from the jetty to the Te Mahia saddle where you can join the Queen Charlotte Track for the Anakiwa Wilderness Walk.

There are surprises galore by the trail, a good eye will spot tiny native orchids. Take your camera to capture the magnificent views of the open bays. Listen to the music of the Skylark in the open and the Tui's and Bellbirds in the bush.

Pick up from Anakiwa Jetty is at 3.30pm for the return to Picton.

Important note: A minimum of 2 passengers are required for this tour to operate.

#15 - Torea Bay to Anakiwa Walk

Transfer from Picton to Torea Bay. Enjoy spectacular views as you climb the main ridge between Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds. Follow old bridle paths through regenerating forest that is home to weka, silver eyes, fantails and many more native New Zealand birds.

Take time to look back over the distance covered during our walk and take in the breathtaking vistas. Your adventure ends with a gentle walk through the magnificent beech forest to Anakiwa where your boat will meet you to return you back to Picton.

Duration: 20.7kms approximately 5-6.5 hours walk

#16 - Torea Bay to Punga Cove Walk

Feel like a challenge? Then the Top of the World Walk is for you! This full day walk from Torea Bay to Punga Cove is 23.6kms long.

Depart Picton at 8am onboard Tracker and cruise to Torea Bay. This is the beginning of a day walk like no other with stunning scenery and challenging terrain. It offers panoramic views of the Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds, quite simply a day full of breathtaking scenery.

Punga Cove Resort is a welcome oasis at the end of a hard day's walk and you have until approximately 4.20pm before you board 'Tiricat' for your cruise back to Picton.

Was very informative and very interesting tour. My friend was (flu) unwell and had to stay downstairs, the skipper was great, my friend handed out the mail and also fed the dogs biscuits to the island homes. Highly recommend it. On a lovely day, it would be fantastic.
