At Akaroa Guided Kayak Safaris, we are ready to bring out your adventurous spirit, only 80 minutes from Christchurch, based in the stunning sea side town of Akaroa, we offer a unique kiwi experience, fully guided sea kayaking safaris that are Serine, Special, Spectacular and Safe!

We invite you to come Sea kayaking in our amazing natural environment, take in our breathtaking Volcanic basin vistas, and soak up our French village by the sea. Akaroa, only 80 minutes from Christchurch, is easy to get to and a must see during your time in New Zealand. You will find us nestled into dramatic valleys which were carved out millions of years ago by volcanoes along the spectacular Banks Peninsula in the South Island of New Zealand.

Grab your sunscreen and get ready for your safari! Our local experienced guides are matched with small groups to ensure a personal and safe experience. Soak in the scenery, explore stunning bays and inlets, paddle in our extinct, sea flooded volcanic crater and hear about some of the rarest and most endangered sea creatures on the planet.

Why Guided? With over 17 square miles of stunning waters to paddle in we take your safety and comfort seriously, in fact it is our number one priority! We pride our selves in maintaining the highest of safety standards and have been awarded safety Certification from “Outdoor Mark” which is a very strict annual safety audit for all New Zealand Adventure Operators, Only the best tour operators in the country hold this award. New Zealand has very changeable and extreme weather conditions.

It is not advisable to kayak with out a qualified guide. Your friendly guides know all the weather warning signs, secret spots, and best times to see wild life ensuring you will get the most out of your experience in a relaxed, safe and enjoyable way. We welcome all participants from age 10-100 that have a basic level of fitness and are able to contribute to the paddling and get in and out of the kayak unassisted! This is a bucket list activity! Options

#1 - Harbour Highlights Safari

Harbour Highlights Safari 11:30am- 1:00pm

If you are first time paddler, and would like a relaxed paced tour this safari is for you!

Your guide will lead you on a gentle tour around the stunning sheltered waters of Akaroa harbour. You will not be taken to any exposed areas and will have the chance to see the highlights Akaroa has on offer with out the time pressure of a half day trip. You will be able to get used to paddling a sea kayak in ideal calm conditions while your guide gives you interesting commentary and captures all the great moments of your time on the water with us.

Your safari will take place in an ancient volcano crater and you will have the chance for up close and personal wildlife encounters and you can tour at a relaxed pace.

Don't forget, You will be accompanied by a personal photographer/guide who will capture all the memorable moments of your kayaking experience.

Departing from Akaroa village on the grass outside Vangionis Trattoria & Bar, or The Peninsula General Store, you will be met at your trip time of 7:30am by your experienced friendly local guide who will share Akaroa's secrets with you. For around 30 minutes you will enjoy a relaxed and informative introduction briefing to Sea Kayaking, preparing you for your safe and fun adventure onto Akaroa's stunning extinct volcanic basin waters. During this briefing you will have time to take in the views and change into your kayaking gear while you learn new skills and prepare for your kayaking experience.

You will learn about kayaking safely and how to move through the water easily. You won't be asked to immerse yourself underwater, unless that is you want to, so relax and enjoy. After your informative safety briefing we will prepare your kayak for launch and assist you onto the water.

Comfort and safety is always a priority during this guided adventure. Under the watchful eye of your guide you will paddle out and begin the safari.

You will gently paddle along the coastline watching out for wildlife and marine activity while your guide points out places of interest and any wildlife activity that they discover. Exploring remote bays and inlets you will engage with nature and the tranquility of sea kayaking, allowing an “up close and personal” natural Eco experience that is unique to New Zealand. An optional extra that can be included in the trip are “on water” photographs which your guide will take for you so that you can share your experience with family and friends around the world afterwards.

Your guide will provide you with New Zealand's most famous cookie, straight from the cookie time factory in Christchurch, while sharing stories about the area and our unique Kiwi French village by the sea.

Why Guided? With over 17 square miles of stunning harbor waters we take your safety and comfort seriously. The weather conditions in New Zealand are extreme and changeable. Renting a kayaking and going out with out a guide is NOT recommended. There have been too many tourist kayaking fatalities in New Zealand. Your local friendly guide knows what weather signs to look for, is trained in rescue techniques and knows the best locations to spot wild life and will ensure you get the most out of your experience in a relaxed, safe and enjoyable way.


#2 - Scenic Cruiser Safari

SCENIC CRUISER SAFARI 11.30AM – 2.30PM
A firm favourite with our experienced guides and a great way to see our stunning shoreline from a unique angle. Departing from Akaroa village on the grass opposite “Vangionis Trattoria and Bar” or “The Peninsula General Store Cafe”, you will be met 5 minutes before your trip time by your experienced friendly local guide who will share Akaroa's secrets with you.For around 30 minutes you will enjoy a relaxed and informative introduction briefing to Sea Kayaking, preparing you for your safe and fun adventure onto Akaroa's stunning extinct volcanic basin waters. You will have time to take in the views & change into your kayaking gear while you learn new skills and prepare for your kayaking experience.

You won't be asked to immerse yourself underwater, unless that is you want to, so relax and enjoy. Your guide will provide you with a kiwi secret, New Zealands world famous cookie time cookie, straight from the factory in Christchurch, while sharing stories about the area, local folk and our unique Kiwi French village by the sea.

After the break you will launch your kayaks back into the water and continue your safari while your guide watches out for interesting activity. Paddling along you will experience the massive scale of landscape at the bottom of our extinct, sea flooded volcano crater.You can choose the optional extra of purchasing“on water” photographs that your guide will take for you so that you can share your experience with family and friends around the world afterwards.
We will also be taking a comfort break on a remote beach for around 20 minutes, during this time you can explore, swim or simply soak up our pure New Zealand environment. Your guide will provide you with a kiwi secret, New Zealands world famous cookie time cookie, straight from the factory in Christchurch, while sharing stories about the area, local folk and our unique Kiwi French village by the sea.

After the break you will launch your kayaks back into the water and continue your safari while your guide watches out for interesting activity. Paddling along you will experience the massive scale of landscape at the bottom of our extinct, sea flooded volcano crater.Your local guide will share how this small village of 600 inhabitants really ticks, explaining and answering any questions that you may have along the way. Your kayaking adventure comes to an end when you land back onto the beach you left a few hours before. You will feel relaxed and energised after your journey. The excursion returns to Akaroa, and upon arrival you will have the opportunity to experience some of Akaroa's historic and beautiful locations in your own time before the day is over.

#3 - Sunrise Wildlife Safari

SUNRISE WILDLIFE SAFARI 7:30AM – 10:30AM
Your local and friendly guides recommended trip of the day is the Sunrise Wildlife Adventure Safari. Soak up the serenity of the most magical time of the day! Enjoy being out on the water away from crowds and the noise of the tour boat engines. There are special areas that we can only visit during the mornings while conditions are favorable, so if you have the opportunity to join us on this safari you are in for a treat. The weather conditions tend to be calmer and wildlife more active at this time. Some of our most memorable safaris have been at this time, so rise and shine- You will not regret it!

Also Included in the Itinerary is a comfort break on a remote beach, here we will stop for around 20 minutes and you can take advantage of this time by exploring, swimming or simply soaking up our pure New Zealand environment.

Your guide will provide you with New Zealand's most famous cookie, straight from the cookie time factory in Christchurch, while sharing stories about the area and our unique Kiwi French village by the sea. We have the chance to see endangered hector dolphins and white flippered penguins as well as loads of sea birds, but remember, these are wild creatures and we are not at sea world!
